Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA
857 PM PDT Tue Apr 8 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
Patchy low clouds and fog along the immediate coast for the next few
days. Fog may be locally dense at times, mainly in the mornings.
Temperatures will steadily rise through Friday for inland areas.
Slightly cooler, cloudier, and windier conditions expected over
the weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...

This evening...Patches of low clouds and fog along the immediate
coast, otherwise only a few thin high clouds. Low clouds and fog
could increase in coverage at the coast overnight. High-resolution
ensemble models show a 50-70 percent chance for visibility 1 mile
or less along portions of the coast between about 3 am and 10 am.
Fog with low visibility could persist at the beaches into Wednesday
afternoon. Low clouds and fog will likely continue each night and
morning through the week along the coast, with periods of dense
fog possible through Thursday. For Friday through the weekend,
increased onshore flow and falling heights will help the marine
layer to deepen, with areas of low clouds and fog spreading
farther inland.

From previous discussion...
High pressure aloft will strengthen over the southwest states
through Thursday, with high temperatures warming a few degrees
each day. Wednesday, high temperatures for the valleys, mountains,
and deserts will be 10 to 15 degrees above average. Highs up to
20 degrees above average expected for Thursday and Friday which
will be the hottest days of the week. Highs west of the mountains
will be similar to Thursday or a degree or two cooler on Friday
with an additional degree or two of warming expected for the
deserts on Friday. The high temperature record for Palm Springs is
101 on Thursday and Friday. NBM chances for new high temperature
records to be set on those days is 82 percent on Thursday and 97
percent on Friday. Moderate HeatRisk is expected for the lower
deserts, minor to locally moderate HeatRisk in the Inland Empire,
and minor HeatRisk elsewhere. Even with the hot daytime temperatures
HeatRisk will be limited by overnight low temperatures falling to
the 50s and 60s, which should allow for overnight relief from the
heat.

By Saturday, a trough of low pressure will approach the West
Coast, pushing the ridge of high pressure to our east. There
remains some uncertainty in the track of the incoming low which
will impact the temperature, wind, and cloud forecast. Current
forecast follows the NBM for Saturday through next Tuesday which
has widespread cooling as early as Saturday with increased cloud
coverage and a slight uptick in winds over the mountains and
deserts.

.AVIATION...
090400Z...Coast...Patchy low clouds and fog will gradually spread
along the immediate coast and up to 5 miles inland overnight. Timing
is uncertain, except that the greatest extent will occur in the 12Z-
15Z Wed range when there is a 90% chance of a BKN/OVC CIG at KSAN.
Cloud bases will be 200-600 ft MSL with tops to 700 ft MSL. Areas of
VIS 1-3 miles in BR will occur with patchy VIS below 1 miles in FG,
with lowest VIS also 12Z-15Z Wed. Clearing will occur back to the
coast 15Z-17Z Wed, with some lingering low clouds/fog at the beaches
through 20Z Wed. Low clouds/fog will likely be similar Wed night.

Valleys/Mountains/Deserts...Mostly clear skies with unrestricted VIS
will continue through Wed evening.

&&

.MARINE...
Areas of fog will continue this week during the late nights through
the mornings and early afternoons, with dense fog with visibility 1
NM or less possible at times. Otherwise, no hazardous marine
conditions are expected through Sunday.

&&
